I absolutely love math. Doing math problems and understanding the connections between math and science and "real life" makes me so so happy. I know not everyone feels the way however, so it's my goal to not only help kids accomplish their math goals but to maybe even enjoy it along the way.
My strategy for success in math has two parts.
First, I help kids connect with the magic and usefulness of math. Math is the language of science as well as nature and finance. Those connections underly the beauty of the equations that kids study in high school but kids don't often see the bigger picture. I make those connections at every opportunity. This improves attitudes.
Second, discipline and preparation are essential for math success. Math education has to be managed for success, much as a sport or musical instrument. Kids seem to innately understand that they can't miss practice for their sport or their musical instrument, but think they can get away with giving homework short shrift. Just like in sports, or music, they may get away with it in the early grades but not in high school. They love the advice and attention of their coach but are often afraid of their math teachers. A good relationship with a private tutor as well as commitment to a routine will greatly improve the process and the results in math. This set up also has the plus that it greatly helps reduce nerves during test times - also leading to improved performance and grades.
